What is Oil Shale?

Oil shale also called as “Bituminous shale” is a kind of sedimentary rock that contains a solid, combustible complex hydrocarbon chain called kerogen which is not soluble in common organic and inorganic solvents. Mineral composition of oil shale should exceed 30%. By using different pyrolysis process, shale oil (synthetic oil) can be produced from oil shale. In 38 countries in the world including Turkey, there are more than a thousand oil shale occurrences which have potential candidate for shale oil production. Total amount of recoverable shale oil is much more than remaining conventional oil reserves when extracted. Success of this crude oil alternative is highly dependent on adapting correct technique for aimed shale structure, minimization of capital investment, mining options and quality of produced crude shale oil.
